Support for Lewisham residents living with Diabetes

diabetes walk 1.jpgWe have commissioned Healthwatch Lewisham to run four Diabetes Peer Support Groups across the borough since January. The group is about giving space and time to people living with diabetes to share experiences, challenges, learning and opportunities with each other. The meetings and discussions cover a range of topics including support and offer advice around exercise, nutrition, motivation and mental wellbeing.

Group participant Nicola Holley says, "I love the way that this group is so friendly. Since coming along, I've managed to give up my KFC habit and now eat salad sandwiches or baked potatoes with coleslaw for lunch instead! Everyone tells me that I'm looking slimmer and more healthy."

The next meetings are:

Wednesday 26 October for NEIGHBOURHOOD 2 (Ladywell, Rushey Green, Central Lewisham and Blackheath) at Lewisham Library, 1.30 to 3.30pm

Wednesday 26 October for NEIGHBOURHOOD 4, (Sydenham) at Lewisham Library,1.30 to 3.30pm

The meetings are free for anyone living and working in Lewisham, and living with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is welcome to come along!  20180628_181257.jpg

These meetings will cover information about healthy breakfasts, such as why is fruit juice something to be wary of when we all tend to think it's healthy and how much is a sensible portion size, as well as discussing health services (the great, the good and the not-so-great) and swapping tips on tasty supper dishes that are low on carbs but still super tasty.

The guest speaker is Stephen, from Lee, a local man whose partner Sandra swims regularly and just happened to hear about the Peer Support groups when she got chatting with the Faciliator, Anne McBride. Stephen lost weight that had caused his T2D as it hindered his Pancreas from working effectively. He has been able to come off all his meds and to put his T2D into remission! He's someone that isn't a big exercise person so he's done it mainly through diet changes. He will be sharing his story - come along and hear how great he's feeling and what tips he can pass on to help those in similar position.

There will be light refreshments at the meeting, which is free and runs from 1.30-3.30pm at Lewisham Library (ground floor meeting room).
