Recognising Carers Contribution to the NHS this Carer's Week

Carers Week runs 11-19 June to raise awareness for supporting carers to be healthy and connected. carers uk.jpg

11 June 2018 – Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It is important to encourage providers, patients and the community to recognise the daily contribution carers make to our health system. The focus on Carers Week this year is to encourage everyone to think about how they can better support carers to stay healthy and connected.

In Lewisham there are over a thousand registered carers looking after mainly infirm and elderly relatives and friends.

Dr Marc Rowland, local GP and Chair of NHS Lewisham Clinical Commissioning Group said: "The reality of the situation is that we are all living longer and that can bring its own challenges in terms of deteriorating health. There is a steady increase in long-term conditions, such as COPD, diabetes and heart disease as well as dementia."

"People's focus is usually on the patient so it is important to take a moment to recognise the carers in our community supporting these patients with long term illness and to encourage them to be healthy, remain connected and seek support when needed."

"This carers week it is important that we raise awareness for the hard work and dedication of carers in south east London and check in on those we know who are caring for someone else.
