Prestigious Gold Award for Lewisham’s Debbie

DebbieB.jpgA specialist nurse with almost 40 years' experience has been awarded the highly prestigious national Chief Nursing Officer's (CNO) Gold Award for Nursing.

Debbie Brown – who is a Clinical Director and member of NHS Lewisham CCG's governing body – is also an Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Lee Health Centre, and Clinical Director for Lewisham Community Education Provider Network, Training Hub (CEPN TH)

The Gold Award recognises an exceptional and significant contribution during a lifetime of achievement in a distinguished nursing career role.

Born and brought up in Lewisham, Debbie's clinical experience encompasses all aspects of nursing, including the wards, X-Ray theatres, A&E, diabetic specialist nursing through to working in general practice from 1997 to present day. She uses expert knowledge and skills, ensuring patients have the right information to make informed choices for better health and wellbeing outcomes.

In 2015, Debbie became a Nurse Consultant in Primary Care – the first role of its kind in England. Beyond that, she's had an active role in several lead nursing forums including NHS England, South London Nursing Network, and the Royal College of Nursing General Practice (RCN GPN) forum. Debbie is also a Queen's Nurse.

Among her many achievements, Debbie was instrumental in setting up Lewisham (CEPN) which sources and hosts training for primary, community and allied health professionals.

NHS Lewisham CCG Senior Clinical Director and Lewisham GP, Dr Charles Gostling, said: "Debbie passionately believes in the community nursing role, and she's driving the local agenda for change.

"Her key achievement is becoming a true leader, inspiring those around her to achieve the best possible for our community.  She is a true team player and is keen to bring out the best in more junior nurses, doctors and everyone contributing to healthcare in Lewisham."

Debbie's dedication to her local community is legendary, and won her an army of admirers.  This commitment has led to even better patient care in Lewisham – and enhanced nurse training that is educating and empowering the next generation of community nurses.

On receiving the award from Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for England at the Lee Green Surgery, Debbie said: "It's a great honour for me to receive the CNO Gold Award, this would not have been possible without the amazing teams working with me and I very much appreciate all the kind and supportive words of colleagues.

"I have a passionate belief in the importance of primary care, and its role in helping our patients lead happier and healthier lives. And by empowering our nursing staff, developing their self-confidence and fostering their potential, we immediately transfer the benefits to patient care."

Debbie added: "For me, nursing has been a true vocation, which has given so many rewards. And to have such a career in Lewisham – my home area and a place that I love – has enabled me to be doubly privileged.  To be the first Advanced Nurse Practitioner to receive the Gold Award is such an honour."
