Lewisham supports the 'Big Health Day'
We're joining our partner CCGs in south east London in supporting and celebrating the first joint Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham Learning Disability 'Big Health Day'.
Aimed at helping people with a learning disability, their carers, support workers and family members, the event will take place on Friday 25 October 2019 at Thomas Tallis School in Kidbrooke, from 10am-4pm.
Lewisham CCG Clinical Director, Dr Esther Appleby said: "The Big Health Day will be inclusive and informative, and also fun. Those who attend will gain so much, and I'm proud that we're working with our partners to deliver this wonderful day.
"Events like this help to challenge the inequalities and exclusion that people with a learning disability face in every area of life. Together, we can make a difference."
The day will focus on giving people advice on general health and wellbeing – plus offer information about cancer education, awareness and prevention, which will include a tour of the inflatable colon.
There will also be an opportunity for people to have mini health checks from one of our volunteer nurses, eye tests and information about keeping ears healthy.
David Cheesman, South East London Cancer Alliance joint Senior Responsible Officer, said: "We hope by funding this event we will be able to provide tailored support and health advice to people with a learning disability and their carers, living in south east London.
"This is something we are passionate about as a Cancer Alliance. While the event will have a cancer and health information focus, we really hope it will be a fun-filled day for all."
In the main hall there will be a 'market place' where there will be a number of support organisations offering a range of information and activities including smoothie bikes, exercise classes and much more.
In addition, there will be dance classes, a theatre group and choir all performing throughout the day, plus there will be a number of workshops which include yoga, staying safe in relationships and more.
On-site free car parking is plentiful and the venue has excellent transport links. Food and refreshments will be provided on the day and there is a large relaxation/cafeteria area.
