Working with our Public Reference Group to measure equality performance

We are responsible for buying health services for the people of Lewisham and we have a legal duty to ensure the services we buy are appropriate for, and inclusive of, our diverse local population with particular regard to nine protected characteristics listed in the Equality Act 2010:

  • gender
  • religion and belief
  • age
  • disability
  • ethnicity
  • sexual orientation
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • gender reassignment

To help ensure we do this, at Lewisham CCG we use the NHS Equality Delivery System – known as the EDS2, a tool to measure equality performance of NHS organisations. As well as reviewing current equality performance, we use this tool to identify future priorities and actions, and ensure continuous dialogue with all stakeholders, eg patients, staff and the public.

During this meeting, members of our Public Reference Group (PRG) received feedback from the EDS2 in 2017 including comments from the Grading workshop and the rationale for the final grades given to the services. The group then considered a CCG EDS2 2018 Case Study list, discussed the services and selected 3 case studies from the list to be assessed by the EDS2 2018. The selected case studies were:

  • Children and Young People's Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
  • GP Extended Access Service (GPEA)
  • Community Falls Service

Commissioners and providers will prepare evidence to show how they support equal access and outcomes for residents in Lewisham. The subgroup was invited to review the evidence before the final grading event for further comments.
