NHS Lewisham CCG supports No Smoking Day – 11th March 2015

Proud to be a Quitter!

GPs in Lewisham are urging people across the borough to take the first step in quitting smoking for good on No Smoking Day which takes place on Wednesday 11th March.

The theme for 2015 is 'Proud to be a Quitter' with the official No Smoking Day website featuring inspirational stories of people who have managed to stop smoking.

While studies show that two-thirds of smokers want to quit 1, nearly one in five UK adults continue to smoke, including 21% in Lewisham.

Smoking remains the primary cause of preventable death in England. Over 80,000 smokers die each year as a result of smoking- related disease2.

Marc Rowland, a local GP and Chair of NHS Lewisham CCG, said, "There are so many benefits to quitting smoking and it's never too late.

"After 24 hours of hours of stopping, lungs start clearing out your build-up of tar and after three to nine months, your lungs will have room for up to 10% more oxygen.

"Any day is a good day to stop smoking but No Smoking Day gives smokers another opportunity to try and quit.

"Smokers are 4 times more likely to quit if they do it with the help of the local NHS Stop smoking Service.  So don't be afraid to ask. It's time to stub out those cigarettes once and for all, hold your head up high, and be proud to be a quitter," he said.

There are many local NHS services and schemes available all year round in Lewisham to give advice and support for people who want to stop smoking.

The No Smoking Day website features a wealth of resources on the best way to give up, including information on local support services and the health benefits of stopping smoking.

The website also includes a supportive forum, moderated by ex-smokers themselves, where people can get support and encouragement from those who are going through what they are going through or who have been there themselves.
